ABOUT ARBUTUS

The Arbutus neighbourhood of Vancouver is an affluent residential area to the West of downtown. It borders along 16th Avenue to the north, Mackenzie Street to the west, 41st Avenue to the south and East Boulevard to the east.

With spatial pieces of property, it sets itself apart from Vancouver’s regular housing developments, and offers large homes running along welcoming tree-lined streets.

The British Columbia Electric Railway laid the way for this neighbourhood to flourish, as was the start of most of the neighbourhoods in Vancouver. Also known as the Lulu Island Railway, this commuter train allowed for passengers to easily flow through this – then – far-flung Vancouver community, growing its roots as far back as 1905, with the train running into 1958.

At the time, this train trip was known as the Vancouver-Steveston Interurban route, and brought many people into the corridors of Arbutus, allowing it to blossom into the affluent community it is today.

With neighbouring communities such as Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and UBC, Arbutus is set apart mostly by it’s opulence and the demographic of families who live there. However affluent, it holds a certain friendly charm and neighbourly appeal to it, and delivers a variety of local conveniences within steps of any given home.

ARBUTUS HERITAGE – STILL STANDING

St. Mary’s Church in Kerrisdale – bordering Arbutus, was one of the first Anglican churches in the area. Built in 1913, it still stands today, offering a pleasant piece of history to the refurbished and newly erected homes that surround it.

There is a variety of schools in the area, including: Prince of Wales Secondary School, Trafalgar Elementary School – offering French immersion education, as well as Carnarvon Elementary School. Some great learning institutions that will make your children feel as welcomed as the neighbourhood itself.
