SOUTH CAMBIE

ABOUT SOUTH CAMBIE

Cambie Street was actually given to the Canadian Pacific Railway as part of a land grant back in the 1800’s, and was named after one of their Engineer’s – Henry Cambie.

With the initial settlers (outside of the First Nations peoples) arriving around 1874 to claim 65 hectares of what was once an elk pasture – now known as Douglas Park – South Cambie began to grow as a community within Vancouver.

Jeremiah Rogers came along around 1910 and implemented the first mechanized logging equipment here in BC, helping to build the first roadway within this area. Thanks to these roads, a Chinese farming community came into being, with homes slowly being built alongside these farms.

A lot of this area wasn’t truly developed as a community until the 1940’s, and since then has become the bustling neighbourhood we know today, and a lot of the original structures can still be found within South Cambie – such as the 1912 house that is now a training site for the RCMP on Heather Street, with other homes to the north of this also constructed between 1910-1920.
